Meet the TMI Team

No. 4: Lizz Nelhams, Finance Manager

In the latest in our series of staff interviews we meet Lizz Nelhams, our Finance Manager.

Hi Lizz. Thank you for agreeing to take part in one of our staff interviews. We’ll start with the same question we ask everyone first. How long have you been working for TMI?

I’ve been working with TMI since 2008. I was part of the original team that set the company up and continued to work with them as an associate until late last year. TMI has recently been through a period of significant growth so in November I joined the company as an employee.

What do you do, as our Finance Manager?

Anything and everything that’s finance related. This includes paying our bills, paying our staff, budgeting, forecasting, completing all our management and statutory accounts and developing our finance policies and procedures.

My work is varied and gives me a fantastic overview of the whole company.

What skills do you need to do your job well?

Apart from the obvious of knowing how to put together a set of accounts and understanding, for example, the statutory rules that affect TMI, I need to be methodical and organised.

It’s also important that I have good communication skills. It’s important the directors understand the framework we need to operate in as well as how we’re doing against our targets. I make sure they have the information they need to develop the company while effectively managing our risk.

What would people never guess you do in your role?

I think people would never guess how varied my role is. There are so many different facets to finance these days so, as well as the more obvious things like paying bills, I work on all our policies and procedures to make sure we’re following best practice and are managing our risks well.

What has been your most memorable moment working for TMI?

There are two. The day I wrote to Companies House when we first set up the company. And more recently, when we were all at our annual staff conference this January. As part of the  event we played crazy golf and I was sure I’d come home with the wooden spoon, but I didn’t (sorry Mel!). I even scored a hole in one!

The best part of the conference though was having the whole team in one place. We all work remotely, and it was great to spend time together.

If you could switch jobs with someone for a day, who would it be and why?

I’d like to switch jobs with someone from our client services department. Every Monday morning,  as an organisation, we have a catch-up call. We each take a turn to update everyone on what’s been going on and what’s coming up.

The client services department often feedback really positive comments and stories from our customers, about our service and the difference Verto is making to them.

TMI’s clients frequently say how helpful we are. Who has helped you the most in your life and why?

My children. They’ve taught me to be patient, which I’m usually not. And they’ve taught me to be more tolerant. They’ve shown me that life is not about following just one set of rules and that there is always another way.

As a result, I’ve learned not to ‘sweat the small stuff’ but to let things go, draw a line and move on.

Which word do you use too often?

My daughter would say I use the word ‘no’ too much!

When are you happiest?

When I’m with my family. It’s what we do it for after all!

I do love my job with TMI as well though. Years ago, when I first I set up my business (because it was easier to work that way with young children) I worked with a broad mix of companies.  As time passed, I slowly let go of my other clients but couldn’t quite let go of TMI. TMI’s innovation, energy and commitment to making their customers’ lives easier is what’s kept me working with them.

Thank you Lizz.  Here’s to many more years of us all working together at TMI. We’ve lots of exciting developments in the pipeline. And who knows what hidden talents you might discover at our next staff conference!

Next time we’ll meet our Technical Director, Ross Mardell.
